When Your Life Works Better Than Your Relationship Does
From the outside, you may have built a life that works.
You manage demanding careers, family responsibilities, children, travel, friendships, and the countless decisions that come with everyday life.
But somewhere along the way, the relationship between you may have changed.
Perhaps conversations that once felt easy now turn into arguments. One of you wants to talk while the other shuts down or pulls away. You may function well as parents or partners in managing your lives but feel increasingly alone with each other.
Or perhaps something happened—a betrayal, loss, trauma, or major transition—that changed the way you see each other and the relationship.
You may still love each other deeply.
You may simply no longer know how to reach each other.
I provide online couples therapy in New York City for couples who want to understand what has happened between them, change painful relationship patterns, and rebuild emotional connection.
I am a New York-licensed psychologist and Certified Emotionally Focused Couples Therapist with nearly 30 years of clinical experience working with couples, relationships, attachment, grief, and trauma.

When You Keep Having the Same Argument
Many couples come to therapy frustrated that they keep returning to the same problems.
You may argue about work, parenting, money, sex, household responsibilities, extended family, or how much time you spend together.
But often the subject of the argument is only part of what is happening.
Underneath may be questions that are much harder to say:
Do I still matter to you?
Are you there when I need you?
Do you still want me?
Can I trust you?
Are we still important to each other?
When the emotional connection between partners begins to feel uncertain, relatively ordinary disagreements can become much more painful.
Over time, both partners may begin protecting themselves rather than reaching for each other.
Why NYC Couples Come to Therapy
Couples seek therapy at many different points in their relationships.
Some are in crisis. Others are functioning well in most areas of life but recognize that something important between them is disappearing.
I work with New York couples experiencing:
- Recurring arguments and communication difficulties
- Emotional distance and loneliness
- Betrayal, infidelity, or broken trust
- Loss of intimacy or sexual connection
- Different needs for closeness and independence
- Work stress and demanding careers
- Parenting and family pressures
- Grief and loss
- Reproductive trauma and pregnancy loss
- Cultural, religious, or family-of-origin differences
- Midlife and empty nest transitions
- Questions about whether to remain together
- Longstanding relationship distress
You do not need to wait until the relationship is falling apart.
Sometimes recognizing that you are losing each other is enough reason to begin.
When the Pattern Between You Becomes the Problem
Relationship distress often develops into a pattern that neither partner intended to create.
One partner may become more frustrated, critical, questioning, or demanding in an effort to get a response.
The other may become defensive, quiet, or withdrawn in an effort to avoid conflict or protect themselves from feeling overwhelmed or inadequate.
Then the cycle begins reinforcing itself.
The more one partner reaches, the more the other retreats.
The more one retreats, the more rejected or alone the other feels.
Eventually, both partners may become convinced that the other person is the problem.
In therapy, I help you slow these interactions down and begin seeing the pattern differently.
Instead of fighting each other, we begin understanding the cycle that keeps pulling you apart.
Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy
My work with couples is grounded primarily in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), an attachment-based approach to helping couples understand and change patterns of conflict and emotional disconnection.
Rather than focusing only on communication techniques or deciding who is right, EFT helps us understand what happens emotionally when your connection feels threatened.
What looks like anger may be an attempt to be heard.
What looks like withdrawal may be an attempt to avoid making things worse.
What sounds like criticism may contain a much more vulnerable question:
Do I still matter to you?
As a Certified Emotionally Focused Couples Therapist, I help couples recognize these patterns and create new ways of reaching for and responding to each other.

When Trust Has Been Broken
Betrayal can change a relationship very quickly.
An affair, secrecy, dishonesty, or another significant relationship injury can leave one partner questioning everything they thought they knew about the relationship.
The injured partner may need to return repeatedly to what happened. They may look for reassurance, answers, or signs that it could happen again.
The other partner may feel ashamed, defensive, helpless, or desperate to move forward.
Both can become trapped in a painful cycle.
Couples therapy provides a place to address what happened without forcing forgiveness or prematurely asking either partner to “move on.”
Repair takes time.
When both partners are willing to engage in the process, therapy can help you understand the injury, address its emotional impact, and explore whether trust and emotional safety can be rebuilt.
When You Feel More Like Partners in Managing Life
Not every distressed relationship is filled with arguments.
Some couples are extraordinarily good at managing life together.
You coordinate schedules.
Raise children.
Manage careers.
Pay bills.
Plan vacations.
Take care of parents.
Get things done.
And yet you may realize that you rarely talk about anything beyond what needs to happen next.
Physical intimacy may have become infrequent or disappeared. Conversations may feel practical rather than personal. You may spend evenings in the same room while feeling emotionally far apart.
There may not have been one dramatic event that caused the distance.
Sometimes couples simply look at each other and realize:
We have become very good at managing our life together, but we have lost some of the relationship between us.
Therapy can help you understand how that distance developed and begin creating space for emotional and physical connection again.
When Grief, Trauma, or a Major Life Transition Changes the Relationship
Relationships do not exist separately from the rest of life.
Pregnancy loss, reproductive trauma, illness, the death of someone you love, caring for aging parents, career changes, children leaving home, retirement, or other major transitions can affect how partners relate to each other.
People also cope differently.
One partner may want to talk.
The other may need quiet.
One may reach for closeness.
The other may cope by staying busy or focusing on practical things.
Neither response necessarily means that one partner cares more than the other.
But without understanding what is happening, those differences can begin to feel like rejection or abandonment.
Couples therapy can help you understand these different responses and find ways to remain connected while navigating difficult experiences together.

How I Work With Couples
When you begin couples therapy with me, I want to understand more than the most recent argument.
I want to understand your relationship.
How did you come together?
Where have you felt close?
What has happened between you?
When does your relationship begin to feel unsafe or disconnected?
And what does each of you do when that happens?
The early part of therapy includes an assessment process. We meet together, and I also meet individually with each partner. This helps me understand your relationship history, important experiences, current stressors, and the patterns contributing to your difficulties.
My role in therapy is active.
I help slow difficult interactions down, identify the cycle as it happens, and help each of you understand what may be underneath anger, criticism, defensiveness, or withdrawal.
As therapy progresses, the work becomes less about simply describing your relationship problems to me and more about helping the two of you have different conversations with each other.
The goal is not a relationship without disagreement.
The goal is a relationship in which you can find your way back to each other when disconnection happens.

Couples Therapy Across Cultures
New York couples often bring together different cultures, countries, religions, languages, family traditions, and expectations about relationships.
What feels natural or respectful to one partner may mean something very different to the other.
Ideas about emotional expression, independence, family involvement, parenting, gender roles, money, sexuality, and marriage can all be shaped by the cultures and families in which we grew up.
These differences do not necessarily create relationship problems.
But during periods of stress, they can contribute to misunderstanding and disconnection.
I have extensive experience working with couples from varied cultural backgrounds, including intercultural and interfaith couples, immigrants, and LGBTQ+ partners.
I do not assume there is one correct way to be a couple.
Part of our work is understanding the relationship the two of you want to create while respecting the histories, identities, and values each of you brings to it.
Online Couples Therapy Throughout New York City
I provide online couples therapy for clients throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island, as well as couples throughout New York State.
For many New York couples, online therapy makes consistent couples work easier.
You don’t need to coordinate another commute across the city or add travel time to already demanding schedules. Couples can attend from a private location where they feel comfortable and return to their day without traveling to and from an office.
Online therapy can be particularly useful for couples managing demanding careers, parenting, business travel, or complicated schedules.
The setting is different from an office, but the therapeutic work remains active and relational. We still slow down difficult interactions, identify the patterns happening between you, and work directly with the emotional connection in your relationship.
I am licensed as a psychologist in New York, so New York couples are receiving care from a psychologist licensed in their state.
Is Online Couples Therapy Right for Us?
Online couples therapy works well for many couples, but the setting still needs to allow for privacy and meaningful participation.
Ideally, both partners should be able to participate from a private location without significant interruptions.
For some couples, meeting together from the same location works best. There may also be circumstances in which partners need to join from separate locations.
We can discuss what arrangement is most appropriate for your situation.
For couples who want longer or more concentrated therapy sessions, I also offer couples therapy intensives.

Is It Too Late for Couples Therapy?
Couples sometimes wait a long time before asking for help.
By the time they begin therapy, one or both partners may feel discouraged.
You may wonder whether too much has happened.
Whether the distance has become too great.
Whether trust can be restored.
Or whether your partner is capable of giving you what you need.
There is no way to promise what will happen in a particular relationship.
But you do not have to know the answer before coming to therapy.
Sometimes the first task is simply understanding more clearly what has happened between you and whether there is still a path toward each other.
