When You Love Each Other but Feel Far Apart
You may still love each other deeply, yet feel increasingly disconnected.
Perhaps you keep having the same arguments without resolving anything. One of you wants to talk while the other shuts down or pulls away. You may feel lonely, misunderstood, criticized, or unsure how to reach each other anymore.
Or perhaps there is less conflict than there used to be. You manage work, children, family, and everyday responsibilities well—but somewhere along the way, your relationship began to feel more like a partnership for managing life than the close relationship you once had.
Sometimes there has been a betrayal, loss, trauma, or major life transition that changed the relationship. And sometimes couples cannot identify exactly when the distance began.
They simply know:
We don’t want to keep living this way with each other.
I provide couples therapy in Houston and The Woodlands for partners who want to understand what has happened between them, change painful relationship patterns, and find a way back to greater emotional connection.
I am a licensed psychologist and Certified Emotionally Focused Couples Therapist with nearly 30 years of clinical experience working with couples, relationships, grief, trauma, and attachment.

When the Same Arguments Keep Happening
Most couples don’t come to therapy because they don’t care about each other.
They come because they care—and what they have been doing to try to fix the relationship isn’t working.
You may talk about the same issues repeatedly:
Money.
Parenting.
Sex.
Household responsibilities.
Work.
Extended family.
How much time you spend together.
Who does more.
Who cares more.
But often the argument itself is only part of what is happening.
Underneath it may be questions that are much harder to say aloud:
Do I matter to you?
Are you really there for me?
Can I depend on you when I need you?
Do you still want me?
When partners no longer feel secure in the answers to those questions, relatively ordinary disagreements can become painful and emotionally charged.
Couples Come to Therapy for Many Reasons
I work with couples in Houston, The Woodlands, and throughout Texas who are dealing with:
- Recurring arguments and conflict
- Emotional distance and loneliness
- Communication difficulties
- Betrayal, infidelity, or broken trust
- Loss of emotional or physical intimacy
- Sexual disconnection
- Grief and loss
- Reproductive trauma and pregnancy loss
- Parenting and family stress
- Cultural or family-of-origin differences
- Midlife and empty nest transitions
- Major life changes
- Questions about whether to stay together
- Longstanding relationship distress
You do not need to wait until your relationship is in crisis.
Some couples come because they are frightened by how far apart they have become. Others recognize the pattern earlier and want to change it before the distance becomes greater.
Both are good reasons to begin.
Understanding the Pattern Between You
When relationships become distressed, couples often develop a pattern that neither partner intentionally created.
One partner may push harder to talk, criticize, question, or become angry.
The other may defend, become quiet, shut down, or withdraw.
The more one partner reaches, the more the other pulls away.
The more one pulls away, the more rejected or alone the other feels.
Eventually, both partners may begin protecting themselves instead of reaching for each other.
In therapy, I help you slow this pattern down and understand what is happening underneath it.
The goal is not to determine which partner is the problem.
The pattern between you becomes the problem we work on together.
Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy
My work with couples is grounded primarily in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), an attachment-based approach to helping couples understand and change patterns of conflict and emotional disconnection.
Rather than focusing only on communication techniques, EFT helps us understand the feelings, fears, needs, and protective responses underneath the conflict.
As a Certified Emotionally Focused Couples Therapist, I help couples recognize the negative cycle that has developed between them and begin creating different ways of reaching for and responding to each other.

When Trust Has Been Broken
An affair, secrecy, betrayal, or another serious relationship injury can change the way you see your partner.
You may love the person sitting beside you and still no longer feel safe with them.
The injured partner may return repeatedly to what happened, needing answers or reassurance. The other partner may feel ashamed, defensive, helpless, or frustrated that the relationship cannot move forward.
Simply agreeing to “put it behind you” usually does not resolve the deeper injury.
Couples therapy can provide a place to understand what happened, address its emotional impact, and determine whether trust can be rebuilt.
Repair takes time, and it cannot be forced. But couples can begin learning whether it is possible to engage with the injury differently and create greater emotional safety between them.
When Life Changes the Relationship
Sometimes the relationship itself isn’t where the problem began.
A pregnancy loss. A traumatic birth. The death of someone you love. Illness. Caring for aging parents. A demanding career. Children leaving home. Retirement. A move. Or another major transition can change the way partners relate to each other.
You may also cope very differently.
One partner may need to talk while the other becomes quiet. One may want closeness while the other needs space.
Over time, those differences can begin to feel like rejection.
Couples therapy can help you understand what is happening underneath those different ways of coping and find ways to remain connected through difficult periods of life.

How I Work With Couples
When you first come to see me, I want to understand more than the argument that brought you into therapy.
I want to understand your relationship—how you came together, what has happened between you, where you still feel connected, and where things begin to fall apart.
The early part of therapy includes an assessment process. We meet together, and I also meet individually with each partner. This allows me to understand your relationship history, important experiences, current stressors, and the patterns contributing to your difficulties.
Then we begin working directly with what happens between you.
My role is active.
I help slow difficult interactions down, identify the cycle as it happens, and help each of you understand what may be underneath anger, criticism, defensiveness, or withdrawal.
Over time, therapy becomes less about simply talking about the relationship and more about helping you communicate with each other differently in the room.
The goal is not to eliminate disagreement.
It is to help you become better able to find each other again when disconnection happens.

Couples Therapy That Understands Culture and Family
Houston is an extraordinarily diverse community, and couples bring much more than two individual personalities into a relationship.
We also bring our families, cultures, religions, languages, expectations about marriage, ideas about gender and parenting, and experiences of immigration or living between cultures.
These differences can enrich a relationship. They can also become sources of misunderstanding—particularly during periods of stress.
I have extensive experience working with couples from varied cultural backgrounds, including intercultural and interfaith couples and LGBTQ+ partners.
Rather than assuming there is one right way to be a couple, I want to understand the relationship the two of you are trying to create and the values that are important to each of you.
In-Person Couples Therapy in The Woodlands & Houston
I offer in-person couples therapy for clients in The Woodlands, Houston, and surrounding communities, as well as online couples therapy throughout Texas.
Some couples prefer being together in the therapy room. Others find online sessions easier to fit around demanding careers, travel, parenting, or different schedules.
The therapeutic work remains focused on understanding the emotional pattern between you and helping you create a more secure connection.
For couples who need more time than a traditional weekly session allows, I also offer extended sessions and couples therapy intensives.

Is Couples Therapy Right for Us?
You may be wondering whether your problems are serious enough for couples therapy.
Or you may be wondering the opposite:
Have we waited too long?
There is no particular level of distress you must reach before asking for help.
You may come because your relationship is in crisis, because trust has been broken, or because you are considering whether to remain together.
You may also come because you recognize a growing distance and don’t want to lose something that still matters deeply to both of you.
You do not have to know how to fix the relationship before coming to therapy.
That is part of the work we will do together.
